Proseminar: Russell’s Logical Atomism

Dienstag, 05.12.2023

Kurs wird auf Deutsch unterrichtet. Beschrieb in Deutsch folgt. This Proseminar investigates Bertrand Russell’s important 1918 (+1923) Lectures on the Philosophy of Logical Atomism. It is no exaggeration to say that with these eight lectures Russell inaugurates the methodology and scientific ideology of analytic metaphysics and analytic philosophy more generally. Russell’s discussion is an offshoot of his earlier interactions with Ludwig Wittgenstein and reflect his own perspective on the same set of issues that would eventuate in Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Russell’s lectures are indispensable background material to the history of early analytic philosophy, but also independently interesting considered on their own as making an important contribution to metaphysics in a longstanding tradition. We will work through the arguments by Russell to understand his arguments in every detail and offer critique of metaphysics contains his work, and we will examine Russell’s logical atomism from the standpoint of Wittgenstein and such critics of Russell as J.O. Urmson, Thomas Baldwin, David Bostock, and Raphael Demos.
