BA (MA) Sachbereichs-Regionalübung: The way of the road – An Anthropology of transport

In this exercise we will engage with the growing anthropological interest in the materialities of mobility, including transportation infrastructures such as roads, railways, automobiles and commuter trains, and the atmospherics of mobility which different ways of movement engender. The aim of the seminar is to explore human-material interactions through the focus on wayfaring and transport, discuss methodologies of the research ‘on the road’ and reflect on the contribution of this sub-field to the discipline of social anthropology in general. The course language is English and contents are based on literature in English. However, the essays may be written in German and an occasional use of German in students’ presentations is possible.
