BA/MA Sachbereichs-/Regionalübung: Stir it Up! Experimental Ethnography in the Anthropocene
Mittwoch, 06.12.2023
In the midst of widespread ecological destruction, extractive capitalism, economic precarity, and persistent social inequalities, how are anthropologists re-envisioning the relationship to earth and its inhabitants? Theorist Donna Haraway argues that the challenge is “to make trouble, to stir up potent response to devastating events, as well as to settle troubled waters and rebuild quiet places” (2016: 1). Following the lines of experimental ethnographies that build from the arts and sciences, we will accompany post-colonial, feminist, indigenous and queer scholars as they consider diverse sites for imaginative thinking and “multispecies world making” (Tsing 2015). Students will have the opportunity to explore experimental audio-visual and multimodal ethnographic practices as we consider key arguments and questions that help us to think through the possibilities for “living ethically in compromised times” (Shotwell 2016).
