Introduction to English Studies

This session will be an introduction to English Studies in the English Department. We will introduce some of the topics that you can expect to cover in the subject areas of Literature - the methods, concepts, and tools that are used when approaching literary texts as well as the specificities of various genres such as drama, narrative fiction, and poetry. We will also cover what you can expect to cover in the subject area of Language and Linguistics, with such topics as speech sounds and the way they interact (phonetics and phonology), the way words are composed (morphology), how words are combined into phrases and clauses (syntax) and how meaning is constructed (semantics).
