Accumulations: Stories of Collecting and Ownership

Dienstag, 05.12.2023
Mittwoch, 06.12.2023

The study of collections and collecting constitutes one of the major aspects of art history. This course explores stories of collecting and ownership by addressing the following questions: How do collections shape the narratives of art history? How do they change the status of the work of art? What meta-discourses are triggered by the collection? How do they contribute in shaping taste? Is the collection still a model for institutions in the 21st century? By examining various public and private protagonists (state, museums, galleries, individual collectors, etc.) and the reception of collections by different audiences, this lecture examines issues of canon, as well as the ethics of ownership, accumulation and possession. In that perspective, it will discuss the contemporary notions of hyper-image and agency, as well as decollecting and the limits of accumulations and donations. It will invite guest lecturers from diverse horizons to discuss the multiple facets of collecting practices.
