Language Attitudes

In this course, we will examine key issues in the domain of language attitudes research. We will reflect on how attitudes and beliefs about language emerge and develop in various social contexts, and the ways in which individuals evaluate others based on language use. The course will cover language attitudes theory, methodological approaches to studying language attitudes, and topics such as: the role of attitudes in second language learning; the role of attitudes in language maintenance and language shift; and language attitudes towards newly emerging varieties. In addition, participants will develop analytical skills to critically examine attitudes through hands-on exercises completed in class and the planning and execution of their own small-scale study, the results of which will be presented in a class conference in the final week.
