BA-Seminar: Queerness in the Middle East

Dienstag, 05.12.2023

Over the last twenty years, the study of LGBQTIA+ topics and queerness in the Middle East became an established field of research. In the seminar we will focus on this field of research, reading different typologies of texts. The texts will range from sources that show how non-normative forms of sexuality were present in the Middle East also in the pre-modern period, to sources that discuss whether modernity and colonialism represented a rupture in the way non-normative sex is discussed in the region, to texts that address the situation of LGBTQIA+ rights and activists' movement in the region. This Seminar accompanies the lecture series "Queerness in the Middle East: History, Activism and Social Change" and is intended as a space to read accompanying literature or texts discussed during the lecture series, to discuss what we learnt during the lecture series, to engage with primary sources on the topic, but also to interact with the scholars who will present during the lecture series.
