Behavioral Science and Sustainability

Dienstag, 05.12.2023

The immense and detrimental consequences for people and nature make anthropogenic climate change arguably the most pressing environmental challenge in the first half of the 21st century. Despite this dire outlook, there is great confidence that increased climate action within civil society and the private sector can curb emissions to bring global warming to the 1.5°C goal. Our lifestyles are a key lever in changing global emissions pathways. Therefore, it is critical to understand household behavior and to examine the behavioral barriers that prevent efficient individual climate action. Individuals can effectively contribute to collective action in a variety of roles (e.g., citizen, investor, consumer, role model, or expert) to shift the economic equilibrium in favor of less resource-intensive service delivery.
