Gods, Politics and Everyday Life
Dienstag, 05.12.2023
Studieninteressierte sind herzlich willkommen! Eine kurze Einleitung des Seminars:
Gods, demons, local and ancestral spirits, as well as all kinds of other non-human actors play an important role in politics on a par with humans. Protector deities, the guardians of the teaching of the Buddha, are a particularly wrathful type of deities. They usually have a terrifying appearance, some of them cause controversies and become involved in the nation-building processes in various countries, others play an important role in rituals and everyday life of Buddhists. Protector deities and spirits that were converted to Buddhism contributed to the buddhisation of different lands and are still used in nationalist discourse and in political conflicts.
This course will introduce contemporary issues linked to religion in countries and regions with Buddhist presence, in the first instance Tibet and Mongolia. The course aims to get students acquainted with the place and rôle spirits and deities occupy in the politics of Mongolia and Tibet. The students will get familiar with the origins and iconography of protector deities and their presence in the religious and lay history of Tibet and Mongolia.
At the end of the course, students will have to give a presentation about a topic of their choice within the framework of the course.
